Trade Shows: Do's and Don'ts

Joining trade shows requires a lot of careful planning and preparation on your end. You shouldn't just dive into it head first. This is your chance to make an impression, and if you are careless, you could actually turn potential clients off. So, make this experience a highly beneficial one and put your energy into a good trade show design. Take note of the following guidelines and take everything to heart.

Trade show do's:

  1. Believe in your product and know it well. Be ready to answer questions because some of these could actually catch you by surprise, but when you are able to address the concerns efficiently, you'll impress those who will visit your booth.
  2. Always have a calling card available to people who will need your services. Let the employees bring one as well in case some of the clients get to talk to them.
  3. Prepare all the participants and share your knowledge with the type of product or service you offer. Also get to know the competition during the actual trade show event. That way, you'll always have an answer to their latest offers. Right now, you need to be the best among the sea of nameless faces.
  4. Work on the aesthetics, especially with the trade show exhibits you'll have. If you can make people notice you, your chances for success increase by a hundred-fold.
  5. Talk to the producers of the event and ask them how their trade shows went in the past. You can also ask for extra tips that will be very helpful for you and your company.
  6. Carefully prepare a budget should you need to stay in a hotel for the entire event.
  7. Ask the help of employees who know how to sell your product.
  8. Go check out your trade show booth before the event even starts so you get an idea on what to do to stand out.

Trade show don'ts:

  1. Plan out only one option. You may run into problems, and when you don't have a plan B, the entire thing could go bust.
  2. Look at the bigger picture only. Being a participant, you'll have to know every detail. Or else, you'll end up running around like a headless chicken trying to fix the problem.
  3. Treat the entire thing as if it were another day at work. If you don't have the enthusiasm, the visitors will see this and will think that you are an organization filled with unprofessional people.
  4. Just go by instinct. If this is your first time to join, you should know what the job entails. You will want to stand out and not stick out like a sore thumb. Or worse, you'll have the sorriest looking displays in the entire show.
  5. Fight for the attendees' attention. Right now, you need to carry on a pleasant attitude, and the way to do that is to look welcoming. They'll go to you if you just stop harassing them.
  6. Go with the flow. While it is necessary to know the basic procedures, new methods might be available. All you need to do is Google it. New studies are being made every day, and it is your job to keep up with trends.

When it comes to trade show exhibits, knowing the do's and  don'ts will be the key to your ultimate success.
